Problems

Growth is supposed to make things easier. So why does every month feel harder?

The usual fix is a meeting. Everyone gets called in, someone says “accountability,” and the team is told to push harder. Maybe you hire another body. A month later, the same deals slip in the same places.

Most of these aren’t effort problems. They’re system problems. The system asks people to do something it makes impossible, then blames them when it doesn’t get done.

S

Sales sells it. Ops eats it.

Your reps promise a timeline, a scope and a price. Delivery finds out after the contract is signed. Then come the rush fees, the overtime and the discounts to keep the client calm. Add up last quarter’s rework, write-offs and goodwill credits. That number is your Chaos Tax, and it grows with every deal you close.

C

Your culture is whatever got tolerated last.

Standards drift from team to team, and one department escalates what another lets slide. Your strongest people notice first, and they start wondering why they bother.

A

Everyone is responsible, so nobody is.

The org chart says one thing and the work does another. Two people own the same task, and nobody owns the one that just broke. Decisions pile up in your inbox because nobody else is sure they’re allowed to make them.

L

You promoted your best performer. Now you have a struggling manager.

Nobody taught them to lead, so they do the work themselves, avoid the hard conversations and burn out. Their team stalls, and the good people leave first.

E

Your process only works on a good day.

It runs on memory, heroics and whoever happens to be in the office that day. A process that needs perfect execution is a wish. When volume goes up, it breaks in the same places every time.

Stop blaming your team for a math problem.

The Chaos Tax

You’re already paying for this.
It just doesn’t show up as a line item.

01

Margin

Discounts, rework, overtime and refunds on deals that should have been profitable.

02

People

The operators holding everything together burn out first, then leave.

03

Your time

Every decision that can’t happen without you is an hour you don’t spend growing the company.

04

Reputation

Clients judge you on delivery. A missed promise travels further than a good pitch.

Selling more won’t fix this. Pushing more volume through a broken system only raises the Chaos Tax.

The fix · The SCALE System

Five parts of your company that have to grow together.

Growth finds the weakest part of a business. When sales outruns delivery, you get chaos. When headcount outruns leadership, you get chaos. The SCALE System scores all five parts, finds the one breaking first, and rebuilds them so they grow at the same pace.

SSales

What your team is allowed to promise, how deals are scoped and priced, and who signs off before anything goes out the door. Every deal lands at the margin you priced.

CCulture

The standards you actually want to run on, turned into weekly routines your managers keep enforcing after we leave.

AAccountability

Roles, reporting lines, decision rights and scorecards, built around how work moves through your company today. Every task gets exactly one owner.

LLeadership

One-on-one coaching for executives, directors and managers, built around the decisions they face this quarter. It includes a direct, repeatable way to settle conflict before it costs you a good employee or a client.

EExecution

The handoff from sale to delivery, and the delivery process behind it, built to hold up as volume climbs. No duct tape required.

Every engagement ends with a written, plain-language plan. Your team owns it and can run it without us.

Shane Hetherington

Founder, Successful Client

I’ve spent my career on both sides of the handoff, taking the order and delivering it. Every time a business started breaking, the cause was the same. The sale and the delivery weren’t built to work together, and the people in the middle took the blame. Successful Client exists to fix the system those people work inside.

Every leg of the relay

01 · The kitchen

Chef → Chef manager → Food service director

Large corporate account · Three satellite locations

I started in kitchens. Over four years I went from chef to chef manager to food service director for a large corporate account, overseeing three satellite locations with multiple chefs reporting to me. A kitchen teaches you quickly how a business breaks. Every event order and daily menu had to get from the person who took it to the people making it, on time, across three locations. When that communication slipped, the client felt it.

The client doesn’t care whose fault it was.

02 · The agency

Sales rep → Account manager

Done-for-you sales agency

From there I moved into sales as a rep at a done-for-you sales agency, selling for two to four client offers at any given time. I soon took on account management for several of those clients, running their sales while giving them the reporting and feedback they needed. That’s where I built the tracking, follow-up, and show-up systems I still use and teach today.

03 · 7th Level

B2B Sales Director → SVP of Fulfillment

7th Level · Sales training

That work led me to 7th Level, a sales training company, where I built the B2B department from scratch as B2B Sales Director. We went into organizations to train their teams, and their trainers, on how their sales and fulfillment pipeline actually works. I then stepped in as Senior Vice President of Fulfillment, growing the department from three or four people to nearly 30, with directors leading coaching, fulfillment, and support.

Along the way

Trained under the best in sales

Sales mentors · COO Alliance

Along the way I’ve trained under some of the best in sales, including Jeremy Miner, Cole Gordon, Sam Ovens, Marc Wayshak, and Matt Ryder, among many others. My operations playbook comes from building and running real departments, not courses, and I keep it sharp as a member of the COO Alliance.

04 · The COO seat

Chief Operating Officer

AI software for car dealerships

Most recently I was COO of an AI software company in the automotive space. I came in, fixed the offer and rebuilt the sales engine, growing yearly sales by more than 600%. The business started bringing in more cash up front and could fund its own growth, and I rebuilt the onboarding, delivery and team operations behind it.
